Adopting the adult dog

“Happy Endings” by Turtle Gardens Animal Rehabilitation Society

Adopting an adult dog makes a lot of sense. The adult dog will be fully grown; no later surprises about size.He may gain weight but he should not grow more than an inch if over 9 months of age.His coat will be full if a long haired breed, (collies grow their long hair after they are six months old) while a short haired dog will remain smooth.Their basic personality will be evident but will blossom and flourish living in a family. Here are a few things that will help the first few days of transition from shelter inmate to family pet.Plan to spend a full day or two getting to know and understand each other’s little idiosyncrasies.

You should purchase the same dog food the dog is used to eating so stomach upsets are kept to a minimum.Have the sleeping area chosen before the dog arrives, so he can have a peaceful area to “take it all in”.Walk the dog around the yard, on leash (most dogs here are leash trained).Show him the designated area for elimination and all the boundaries of his yard. Then bring him indoors, on leash, and show him the household and his private area. Have him lie down and give him a body massage.Rub him all over his body, over his head, feet, belly.Talk softly to him all the while. You will see him visibly relax. Then, leave him -“ stay in your corner” - and let him assimilate his surroundings. If necessary tie him with the leash.

In an hour or so, take him for another walk, teach him sit if he doesn’t know ( most know the command here) and play with him. Get to know him and him you.

Put his dinner ration in a bowl and hand feed him. This little training tip is called “Nothing in life is free” and is very instrumental in establishing the human/animal bond.He will look at you as his leader - you are responsible for giving him his food.Feed him after your supper, you are alpha so you eat first.Make him sit. Give him a handful of dinner. Call him to you then give him another handful. Then sit etc. This exercise will probably take 10 or 15 minutes and will go a long way in building the ground rules of house manners.Housebreaking is a two day chore with an unbroken adult. The reward system is very effective with an adult.Take him to the elimination spot, when he does his “duty” give him a great treat(cheese, wiener, cooked liver). Tell him “do your duty” or whatever command you wish to use as he does “it”.Don’t give him treats any other time until he understands the duty command. Two days should work unless he’s dense then four will do the trick.By the way, a dense dog is especially good as a children’s pet.Too smart and he needs stimulation and extra care to satisfy him and keep him happy.

All in all, the adult will fit in quickly and easily with a little extra time and training especially if he is part of the family.

Turtle Gardens has a variety of young adult dogs and cats, puppies and kitten available for adoption. Call 696-3188 for information.

‘Happy Endings” by Turtle Gardens Animal Rehabilitation Society - Apr23/03

It is so quiet that I can hear the clock ticking. Because I can, I stop what I am doing and listen to the quiet ticking. Soon I hear a pup slurping water and turn to look at the pretty chocolate coloured girl drinking at the water pail. She doesn’t realize how close to death she had been on Friday. She was on the table scheduled for euthanasia by the pound. She sat expectantly, a young, healthy baby supposed to die because she was unwanted. Pound dogs die every day; young, healthy, adoptable prospective family pets. But not this one. She was rescued by Turtle Gardens, vaccinated by Burns Lake Veterinary Clinic (thank you for caring so much), dewormed and has an adoption pending in Saltspring Island. We are full to capacity with wonderful family dogs. Expenses are high for the vaccinations wormer, food - an 18 kg bag and a half every day as well as puppy food, cat food and cat litter, as well as wood pellets to keep the wood stove warm for the furry freeloaders. Of course the biggest expense is the spaying and neutering of all the eligible animals - cats and dogs. Donations are needed desperately to help save as many unwanted, adoptable family pets as we can.

There was five tiny puppies in the box left under their mailbox in Hazelton. Their eyes were barely open. They were bottle fed by their daughter during the night and brought in to Turtle Gardens.   Ten pairs of cloudy blue eyes looked up at me from black, foxy faces. These would be smaller dogs. Bottle fed with puppy milk replacer they have thrived. They can now lap softened puppy food mixed with their milk. Messy but a lot less work than bottle feeding every three hours. They are fed six times a day. Every time they wake up they eat. They need cuddles and loving to help them become social, little companions and that part is so easy because they are so cute. All puppies and kittens are cute. But they grow up into dogs and cats. How they grow up depends on how they are raised. Like children they need, boundaries set and discipline tempered with lots of love. Positive reinforcement works best. Lorna and I have written a Beginner’s Guide to Clicker Training. The booklet sells for $15 and includes the clicker. ALL the proceeds are used by Turtle Gardens for spays and neuters. We are also planning a Giant Yard Sale June 20th and 21st in the Steelhead Park in Houston. Donations and volunteers to help in setting up or picking up donations would be greatly appreciated. One hour to help needy animals in your community. Please help Turtle Gardens help adoptable pets.

Hey Mom I hope you like my choice. I hope your flight was smooth talk to ya soon don’t worry we will hold the fort for you. Son #1

TG Bus on its way home!

Filed under: Uncategorized — yvette @ 2:45 pm

Dave left last night at 6pm. He called me this morning at 11.11 am to say he was in Prince George so 3 hours from home. He was going to buy ink for my printer so I can print my tickets for my flight tomorrow at 7.55 pm. I am flying to Ontario - leaving tomorow from Smithers to Vancouver then on to Toronto arriving early Thursday morning. There is a 6 hour wait to Sudbury so my sister is meeting me at the airport and we will drive to Sudbury. My plans include the library only a half block from my parent’s apartment so I can check emails and keep up on what is happening. Stan will post articles I have written and news from TG - he will talk to Dave to see how he is surviving. The numbers of dogs is down so he should be fine We do have one in the pound - well actually in foster with the dogcatcher waiting to come in. She is a small white terrier puppy. Very cute! She will be posted on petfinder today.

Lil Tramp has come back - someone told the adopter that she had shepherd in her!! She is a cocker spaniel/pomeranian mix and at 3.5 months old weighed 7 pounds. She is definetly a small dog. She learned new life skills though - she travels very well and met a lot of people. She will find her perfect match!

More TG Adoptions!

Filed under: Uncategorized — yvette @ 2:40 pm

Thank you so much to Stan and daughter Kelsey for your incredible help in sending our furry firiends to their families. And Stan for taking the van to the car wash, ripping out the smelly carpet, presure washing the whole inside and out and putting smaller rugs that can be removed and washed to stay clean. Now the TG Bus smells clean and can really transport our furry friends in comfort! Thank you son! Stan also bought 14 bags of food so that there would be a surplus while I am away visiting my eldery parents (Dad used his airmiles to ensure I visit!!! ) I am very happy staying home so this is a wrench for me to leave for 2 weeks.  Then Sam of Bully Buddies  arrived with a whole van load of very good quality food! Sam fosters and adopts my pittie/bullie/staffie mixes which are very hard to place up here. She does an exemplary job placing her dogs. Many KUDOS to Sam and Bully Buddies!!  Reuben is the latest but we have sent Titus, Xia and her daughter Xiu, Otter, Toonie, Hoochie, Shelagh (not a bullie but an emergency!), and more that I can’t remember right now .  Awesome work for awesome dogs! Thank you.

Also a big THANK YOU to Gerald who transported Lunar today - the rain forced one cancellation then Stan and Dad got lost and missed that flight so Gerald to the rescue this morning! You obviously know dogs well - Lunar is in very capable hands and Tamara will have her boy today. Thank you.

And now the adoptions. This is Christianne with Phife adopted last year from TG - he is Dave’s little Ragamuffin’s brother!!
Meeting little Kenny. Now - look at that grin!! Kenny is happy.

Here is little Brier meeting Maggie - also from Turtle Gardens - adopted last year! You can’t have just one!!

A perfect match!
And our first email -

Hi there Yvette! Just wanted to say thanks for Brier arriving safe and sound. She is really settling in well. When I picked her up yesterday she was pretty scared. She shook all the way home. After a bath, some food and Maggie growling in her face for a while, she settled in quite nicely. Maggie is still bossing her around and I expect that to happen for a while, but she seems happy anyway. I’ll send some pictures soon! J The whole family is really happy with her.

We have renamed her Maxine (Max or Maxi for short) and she’s already starting to listen when being called. Pretty smart little thing. Between the 2 of them, they’ll be running the house pretty soon! Well, they probably do already. So, we’re up and running and I hope your family gets home safe and sound! Talk to you soon! J

Hey Mom Your happy endings pics are uploaded on to the server, yes it is 12:34 am and I just made it home. but there are going to be there for mor as promised. Wow is was a long day so many wonderful things to tell you all the adoptions went great. It sure was nice to see so many happy people so well matched to there new family members. I have to admit I as a little worried about Spice she seemed so unsure and worried and not happy about the 18 hour ride.

She was kinda hiding in the corner while the rest were running and play having fun in the rain.

Here is Dad and Kelsey having fun in the rain.Oh man your furry friends were very happy to get out of the van. She just kinda stayed quiet during the first few adoptions, but she some how knew it was her turn, to be happy forever.
She was a little shy at first but walked right up to her new family with her courage being fueled by her new found sense of belonging, mixed with acceptance and love.

I seen his hat and thought oh no !! she is not going to like that , but she still never wavered.

She said thanks and goodbye to Dad, while Kelsey and I did her paper work.
Mom She just walk right over to the truck and jumped right in!!!!!!!!

Well the picture kinda says it all, it’s a happy ending, Thanks for sharing your treasure with me it’s nice to be reminded, Why you do what you do . Love Son #1

The TG Bus has arrived!

Filed under: Uncategorized — yvette @ 3:47 pm

Dave arrived at 12.30 pm - he waited in the canyon for the rain to let up! Christianne read in the blog that her Kenny was arriving today - I sent her email with the address and phone number to her work instead of home!! Good thing she reads the blog!! It is also how my boys knew Dad was coming down with the dogs!! At least I know they are reading the blog!! I was planning to phone them once the hulabaloo dies down and I had a chance to eat breakfast - at 5 pm!! No wonder I am losing weight! Some days are way busier than others.

Another adoption today! The littlest lab mix from Hazelton has been adopted. This was their third trip here looking for a companion to “choose” them!! And this little guy sure did. I was totally amazed that this little 9 week old pup walked happily on leash to their car - he had never even worn a collar yet!! What a smart little boy!

Dozer was the first adoption to go home today. Lunar has a ride to the airport - thank you so much Smitty! Net working rocks! More to come as it happens.
