Turtle Gardens needs a foster home in Vancouver

February 26th, 2007

Snoopy thought he had a forever home when he took the TG Bus down to Surrey on February 16th. His new mom and dad live on the same property as his dad and step-mom. Dad said a dog was ok. So Snoopy arrived. Stepmom went ballistic and said Snoopy had to go – no dogs allowed. Snoopy is in a temporary foster – very short term. He needs a foster home that will take him for the time it will take to find him a new family – a forever family.

Snoopy is 4 months old,  a black/white and tan lab/hound puppy. He asks for the door to potty, is crate trained, walks on a leash, knows sit and shake-a-paw. He is very friendly, smart and a soft, soft puppy. Can anyone help Snoopy find his new home?

UPDATE: Snoopy has gone for a sleep-over! Keep fingers and paws crossed thta this is his home!

Another day at Turtle Gardens

February 26th, 2007

My morning chores are done – the old dogs were very good last night! Just one deposit from the old fellow Willow. Nelson and Tinker raced outside with the rest of the crew and pottyed outside too. Nelson always gets off my bed during the night and has become quite agile on getting back on. Not bad for a small guy like him – just 5 pounds of fluff!
The food and water dishes are full – an extra one is in the kitchen for Dave’s Apple Dumpling Gang  – while he is away they don’t move from their corner. Except old Sasha (16 years old) and funny Gopher (13 years old)  – they have lived with me long enough to finally accept me as their servant when Dave is away.
And best of all my coffee is hot and delicious!

Why isn’t Dave home yet? Because as he was leaving the red idiot light on the dash indicated he had no brakes in front. When he checked brake fluid – it was totally empty. The back reservoir was nearly empty as well. there had to be a break in the line somewhere. He remembered there was a lot of debris on hte freeway – he swerved to miss most of it but had to drive over some of it. It must have damaged his brake lines. He and Stan have been working on it ever since.
Meanwhile life goes on here. Jetta has an enquiry from Jeff who lives a very active outdoorsy life in Smithers. He asked If I thought Jetta would be a good fit for him. Jetta is very active outside – very playful with the other dogs – especially follow the leader and tag.  Indoors she is quiet and very well behaved and housebroken too. She would be an ideal companion for Jeff or any active person. I have scheduled her for her spay and vaccinations and then she will be ready for her new home. Her puppy Tinker will be vaccinated this week and picked up by Ann’s friend for her trip to Terrace to meet her new family.
Kernel Pupter was driven from his foster home in North Vancouver to Seattle yesterday and met his new mom Nadine. This what Suzanne and Ian had to say:
Just a quick email to let you know how the trip to US with Col. Pupter went. All the confusion worked itself out. We arrived home late ( midnite) on Sat. nite from a week in Palm Springs to an email from Nadine wanting to meet me before noon in Seattle. I quickly replied that I probably couldn’t get there before then and asked her to call me in morn.

She called at 9 and I was on my way to pick up Pupter from his temp foster before 10 am. There were tears from his temp foster as they had become very attached to him as well as Grey Ghost. The Col. Was a little reluctant to get in  my car and leave his happy family and cats but went along with the program. He kept leaning over to the front seat to give me kisses on the way. He was so well behaved and quiet on the way even tho his tummy was a bit upset. He is just a lovely dog. Nadine and I kept in touch by cell and met half way to Seattle. It was love at first sight for the two of them and more tears. I told her although she had a lovely new kennel that he had travelled perfectly in the backseat so she decided to try it that way as well. He hopped into the back of her suv with no prompting. It was a very rewarding experience all round, and I know he will be happy in his new home. Keep up your wonderful work and if I can help in some way, let me know.

Suzanne

I had emailed Nadine to see if everything had worked out in the afternoon. Here is her reply:

yes!  we met in northern washington and he’s here with me in spokane now.  he’s so beautiful!  he’s definitely still v. nervous–i still can’t get him to pee, though he did have diarrhea in the apartment upon arrival (a welcome home gift of sorts?)–but i’m sure that after a few days he’ll adjust.

i’ll send a more detailed update in the next couple of days and will mail the form from suzanne along with your payment.  in the meantime, rest assured that he’s warm and well cared for, and that i couldn’t be happier or more grateful for your help in getting him to me!

Another Happy Endings! Though this one had `a larger group of people involved. Thank you Michael and Jana for fostering Kernel Pupter eventhough you had just adopted Grey Ghost! He is a lucky fellow to have such caring people as his family!! Thank you Suzanne and Ian – just coming back from holidays – you still drove the extra mile to pick up Kernel Pupter and then drove him across the border to his new mom. You are awesome!!

Adopting a teenager from Turtle Gardens

February 23rd, 2007

Teenagers may be the ultimate age to adopt a dog. There are a lot of advantages to teens. They are flexible enough to fit into your lifestyle. They are old enough to leave alone for short periods without paper on the floor etc. They may need to learn toilet training but that is days training compared to weeks training with a baby. They can well hold it longer or can stay outside longer. They can go places with you.

For example – on hikes, long walks, in the vehicle, in a boat. A puppy’s joints cannot handle long walks or hikes until six months of age. Dogs cannot compete in agility until they’re eighteen months old, to prevent injury to growing bones. The pup will show its size, coat texture and length by the time it is six to eight months old.It makes a lot of sense in our busy lives to adopt a teenager dog. Jetta is a golden retriever mix that is now, getting the fringes of the golden, She is very pretty with her lustrous coat. Her pup is shorthaired as a baby. Another plus with the older pup is the ability to assess its temperament. Chuck looks like a husky mixed with collie. He has an un-husky attitude. He hangs around, does not run away, is very attentive and learns quickly, much like the collie. Jade looks like a beagle in the face but is a calm, sweetheart of a little dog.

In a mixed breed what they look like may not be, what they act like.Temperament should always be what is looked for in a family pet. Yet it is often looks that attract the notice. Such is the case with Mogli. He is a mush with children. My ten year old granddaughter could put the halti on him, walk him, play with him, hug him, wrestle with him, ride him, do whatever she likes. Mogli is as gentle as can be. Yet he jumps four feet in the air when approached and is homely to boot. He was born here and iwas adopted as a two year old.

There is a good variety of teen dogs available at Turtle Gardens and all are spayed or neutered. Funds are needed to continue the spay/neuter program as the pups reach 5 months of age and for the new arrivals. Pet overpopulation is caused by pet copulation. Turtle Gardens urges you to be part of the solution. Spay or neuter your pets.

Rayla from TG achieves Rally O Versatility Title

February 22nd, 2007

Rayla was adopted December 31, 2000 by Lorna, my friend and trainer who devotes so much time and energy to Turtle Gardens. Rayla has her Championship Title with the  Agility Association of Canada and has been competing in Rally O Obedience for two years. On February 10 Rayla and Lorna achieved the highest tiltle in Rally O -  Versatility !! Dogs competing in Versatility have to do the exercises from either side of the handler ( heel on both right and left) while executing the course with several changes of side throughout – all off leash .  Rayla and a little poodle named Pepper are the first two dogs to achieve this title in Rally west of Ontario !! Congratulations Rayla and Lorna. But what really is astounding is the fact that Lorna trains alone. She does not have the luxury of a training facility or other like minded people to train with. She is alone. With the Canadian Rally O site  as her guide and articles from the Dog Sport Magazine
Lorna trained herself and Rayla.. What an accomplishment for Lorna and what an ambassador for Turtle Gardens!
