Another day at Turtle Gardens
My morning chores are done - the old dogs were very good last night! Just one deposit from the old fellow Willow. Nelson and Tinker raced outside with the rest of the crew and pottyed outside too. Nelson always gets off my bed during the night and has become quite agile on getting back on. Not bad for a small guy like him - just 5 pounds of fluff!
The food and water dishes are full - an extra one is in the kitchen for Dave’s Apple Dumpling Gang - while he is away they don’t move from their corner.
Except old Sasha (16 years old) and funny Gopher (13 years old) - they have lived with me long enough to finally accept me as their servant when Dave is away.
And best of all my coffee is hot and delicious!
Why isn’t Dave home yet? Because as he was leaving the red idiot light on the dash indicated he had no brakes in front.
When he checked brake fluid - it was totally empty. The back reservoir was nearly empty as well. there had to be a break in the line somewhere. He remembered there was a lot of debris on hte freeway - he swerved to miss most of it but had to drive over some of it. It must have damaged his brake lines. He and Stan have been working on it ever since.
Meanwhile life goes on here. Jetta has an enquiry from Jeff who lives a very active outdoorsy life in Smithers. He asked If I thought Jetta would be a good fit for him. Jetta is very active outside - very playful with the other dogs - especially follow the leader and tag. Indoors she is quiet and very well behaved and housebroken too. She would be an ideal companion for Jeff or any active person. I have scheduled her for her spay and vaccinations and then she will be ready for her new home. Her puppy Tinker will be vaccinated this week and picked up by Ann’s friend for her trip to Terrace to meet her new family.
Kernel Pupter was driven from his foster home in North Vancouver to Seattle yesterday and met his new mom Nadine. This what Suzanne and Ian had to say:
Just a quick email to let you know how the trip to US with Col. Pupter went. All the confusion worked itself out. We arrived home late ( midnite) on Sat. nite from a week in Palm Springs to an email from Nadine wanting to meet me before noon in Seattle. I quickly replied that I probably couldn’t get there before then and asked her to call me in morn.
She called at 9 and I was on my way to pick up Pupter from his temp foster before 10 am. There were tears from his temp foster as they had become very attached to him as well as Grey Ghost. The Col. Was a little reluctant to get in my car and leave his happy family and cats but went along with the program. He kept leaning over to the front seat to give me kisses on the way. He was so well behaved and quiet on the way even tho his tummy was a bit upset. He is just a lovely dog. Nadine and I kept in touch by cell and met half way to Seattle. It was love at first sight for the two of them and more tears. I told her although she had a lovely new kennel that he had travelled perfectly in the backseat so she decided to try it that way as well. He hopped into the back of her suv with no prompting. It was a very rewarding experience all round, and I know he will be happy in his new home. Keep up your wonderful work and if I can help in some way, let me know.
I had emailed Nadine to see if everything had worked out in the afternoon. Here is her reply:
i’ll send a more detailed update in the next couple of days and will mail the form from suzanne along with your payment. in the meantime, rest assured that he’s warm and well cared for, and that i couldn’t be happier or more grateful for your help in getting him to me!
Another Happy Endings! Though this one had `a larger group of people involved. Thank you Michael and Jana for fostering Kernel Pupter eventhough you had just adopted Grey Ghost! He is a lucky fellow to have such caring people as his family!! Thank you Suzanne and Ian - just coming back from holidays - you still drove the extra mile to pick up Kernel Pupter and then drove him across the border to his new mom. You are awesome!!

Our dog Kip wouldn’t pee for the first 24 hours either! We were very worried about it but eventally nature wins out. I am so glad the saga of Col Pupter had a happy ending! He has had a very tough week indeed - give him a week or so to settle in and he will bounce back. Travel and new people/homes can be very tough on young dogs, they don’t have the life experience to process it. Thank you to everyone who helped Col Pupter find his home.

Riley had trouble the first 24 - 48 hrs. also, some post traumatic stress, but now she has a routine and goes outside with lots of praise, required getting up with her the first few nights at every hour, now she is confident that she can come back in just after peeing and pooping, she has a wonderful older brother here who kisses her and tells her also how good she is, he demonstrates everything for her, in fact he is becoming protective, today at the off leash park a dog , running too fast to put the brakes on, ran into Riley, hurt her leg, Bear came to the rescue and boy did he scold the other dog, but no real fight, they are truly a perfect match and Riley completes Bear. all the best, travelling , adjusting, food changes , the whole works, takes a lot of time and patience, but very rewarding in the end.

We adopted Phebie from TG 2 years ago. She had the same issues with trust and going pee infront of me. We bought her a 20 foot - not retractable as the sudden retraction can be scary- leash at the dollar store and turned our backs to so she didn’t feal like we were watching her and she “snuck” a pee for the first several weeks. EVERY dog I have ever adopted has had a “yucky” tummy for the first few days. Just stress, keep an eye on the new one to make sure there aren’t any other health issues or that he/she doesn’t get too dehydrated and call the experience great bonding!!!
