Misty returns to Turtle Gardens

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 11:17 am

Misty is a three year old Rottweiler mix who was adopted by a young couple in December of 2006. For two months, she was a perfect companion. Then all of a sudden she started showing severe separation anxiety that manifested itself in destructive behaviour.  Crated - she destroyed the heavy plastic and chewed her way out. She bent wire crates to get out. She chewed through moldings and doors to get out. Relegated to outside, she dug under the fence or jumped the gate. She slipped out of harnesses and collars when tied up. She ran around the neighborhood until picked up by animal control.

Four  months ago, a black lab female came back with Misty. No one claimed her so they kept her hoping she would calm Misty. They became very good friends but Misty still would not stay home alone without humans.  A call to Turtle Gardens assured them that Misty could come back here - I ALWAYS take back my dogs.

Yesterday they arrived with Misty and Lady. Misty pulled like fury on leash.  She wouldn’t sit. She drooled. She was stressed to the max. Lady is a solid black, chubby lab girl. She was calm, her tails slowly waving. She was happy to see me. The woman was cuddling a small white, fluffy terrier mix puppy. She left Misty’s bed and half a bag of food and a small donation for Lady - yes we offered Lady a safe haven too. And left holding the cute puppy.

Lady and Misty were brought into our new yard and turned loose but dragging their leashes so I could catch them if they tried to escape. They had a drink, checked out the yard, the other dogs then wandered up to the porch with all the crates and beds. They found the food dishes, and a comfortable igloo house to sleep in. They are adapting very well. They have eaten, slept, drank and wandered the yard. They have not tried to dig, jump or destroy. Mind you they are nor alone either. They have come into our cabin to check in, had treats then went out again. Turtle Gardens welcomes Misty and Lady.

Misty looks like a small rottie.

Beautiful Lady.

  1. i relate, as we adopted Riley to help our wild breed with his seperation anxiety, they play, get along and do eveything together with us, but unfortunately the companionship of Riley did not solve that problem, we also have had door moldings torn off , drywall cheweed through, windows broken, doors unlocked, floors torn up and a institutional (heavy gauge), crate destroyed with the dog almost destroyed with it (losing teeth or guts torsioning is not pretty), so unable to in my heart to return this poor soul i have pretty much given up my career, the ability to visit relatives who don’t allow dogs, in other words, because the two of them together are so fantastic, and as long as he knows where i am , all is well, life is great. But i am a prisoner, my only regrests are when people dont’ understand. I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone and i know that i must be crazy to stick with it and turn away from a paycheck, family and friends just to stay home, but we have found many dog friendly outings , camping, off leash areas etc., so it is not all bad, just lonely sometimes when i miss family reunions and important events, well, maybe one day it will get better, who knows, i have read every book, spoken to jbehaviorists etc., it must be the grey wolf in him as he appears to be working to become a human, is much further along in this life than some humans i know and the dogs that i have had, so this must be teaching me somethign about the nature of animals and people, at least with a wild animal you know what you have, it is honest, it is black and white, with people just when you think you can trust them they turn on you, so becoming a dog is not so bad, i certainly relate to them better, inspite of the baggage they came with, but my God, look at the baggage i came with, and my hubbie still married me,
anyway, i think people should not be judgmental about any choices that people make about their animals, because either choice we make people judge us as bad, I am bad because i live with it , or someone else is bad because they can’t live with it, we all have our own reasons and stories, and it is really a wonderful thing that these dogs at least can go back to Yvette, as most don’t have that option. I know she doesn’t get out either, because of the seperation anxiety and work with her dogs, we know, because we travelled many miles withi our dogs , camping, to visit her in Topley, she couldn’t even go outside of her gate and leave the poor souls, who all keep an eye on her, just like my guys do here.

well all the best , wish life were easier for us all, Marka
