Turtle Gardens has new arrivals, an adoption and a very special update!

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 4:21 pm

What a couple of very busy days!!  Linda arrived early yesterday morning with the new arrivals - Koda, Shadow and her son Optimus. Poor little Koda was attacked by a group of dogs and bitten quite badly then because his people could not take him to a veterinarian his wounds soon festered. The smell told his owners he needed help so they called Hazelton Animal Care and Control. Linda picked him up and took him to Babine Pet Hospital where he was put under to clean his wounds and neutered too - a bonus! but his owners could not pay his bill so asked Linda to find him a home. Turtle Gardens welcomes Koda!!

Next out was Shadow - and she sure looks like her son Kernel Pupter! Lou her daughter is all black but slender like her. Optimus her son thta came in with her had a different dad - his looks are not at all like the rest of the litter! Shadow is a sweet, gentle dog with very good indoor manners. She is housebroken and very quiet. Optimus needs training in manners - he is an overgrown puppy. Turtle Gardens welcomes Shadow and Optimus!

Pretty Shadow.

Handsome Optimus.

Actually there were two dogs going home yesterday. Linda transported Dexter to Smithers and Lorna fostered him overnight and put him on his plane this morning at 7 am!
So Dexter has been adopted!
Good luck Dexter - be good!

His  family has already updated:

Hi Yvette.  Dexter arrived safe and sound at 9:30 this morning.  It was so exciting to pick him up at the airport.  He was very calm when he arrived but when we took him out of the crate to go to the bathroom, we couldn’t get him back in!  So he laid down in the van under the girls’ feet and he settled right down.  A few whimpers, but I think he’s okay.  Now that he’s home, he seems to be settling in just fine.  The girls can hardly wait to walk him around the neighbourhood to show their friends.  Thanks again for making these arrangements!

I will send the crate early next week.

ps Jemma and Olivia say thank you for the dog!  They really love him.  (pics to follow soon)

And later that afternoon I received a visit from a young couple who heard from our veterinarian about handsome Spencer. Spencer did very well, sat when asked and walked very well on leash. Char - you did a good job with him!! Spencer has gone home!!

Good luck Spencer - kitties are buddies - be good!

And a very special update:

Just a short while ago I received a phone call from Anita asking If I knew any history on the fellow she has just adopted - SILAS has a home!!!

Here are some pics of our Silas and his new brother Tundra.

  3. Thank you Jude, but I seem to think he is our angel. He went for the first time to the groomers the other day…loved it, and behaved like a true champ. He’s finally eating well. After taking advice from turtle gardens and mixing in some canned food, he’s devouring it! We have acreage, but Silas lets his brother Tundra have free roam because Silas likes to just be. Yesterday we went on 3 short walks. I don’t want his leg to get too sore, but do want him to keep the strenght he has in it. Silas and Tundra come everywhere with us, even if it’s to the corner store. They love their car rides, and love eachother….in the end…it’s all that matters….love heals….
thanks again to everyone that’s helped in his recooperation, and loving our Silas. We love you, and may God bless you all.

  4. Great news about Silas - he looks happy, nice that he has a “brother” to play with! A long awaited happy ending!

Glad you liked all the names - you really got some good ones to choose from.

Oh my, Kernel Pupter’s mother, isn’t she a beauty! I have a real soft spot for Kernel from when he spent that week here with us…if his placement had fallen through, it would have been hard not to have just kept him with us! His brother is pretty darn cute too. In fact, you have so many nice dogs right now…I can’t figure out why no one has adopted Chuck or Boots - they sound like such nice dogs (I know I am sorely tempted!)

Feel free to pass on the photos I sent you of Grey to your friend Lorna so she can get a closer look of him to compare to her Kitsa. Yes, he has gotten more “blonde” in his coat along his back and at top of his head/base of ears. I assumed this was either his summer coat or a change in diet from what he was eating previously. He has that fuzzy/wirey hair all on his face, chest, legs and feet. People always comment on his feet - I say it looks like he is wearing furry snowboots! We recently saw a movie called “Because of Winn Dixie” - the dog in that (other than the colour) looks just like Grey…apparently the dog they used in this movie is a “picardy shepherd” or “berger picard” a relatively rare breed of herding dog from France not common in North America (but chosen for the part because he resembled a “mutt”!) I had never heard of this breed before myself. Perhaps Grey, Kitsa and some of your interesting “turtle garden specials” should get an agent (he he)!

    Take care,

    Jana

  5. HURRAY for Silas!

  6. Thanks Jana,
Several people have told me Kitsa reminds them of the dog in Winn Dixie, I haven’t seen the movie, didn’t realize the dog was purebred. Have to look up Picardy Shepherds. She reminds me of a herding dog in looks but seems far more interested in rabbits and mice than sheep or cattle, as I live in a rural area that is a good thing.

  7. So glad to see Silas has a great home. I remember him being surprisingly active at Turtle Gardens, always running and playing with the other dogs. He has probably lost a lot of strength and mobility with being kept in a kennel at the SPCA, I imagine he will improve again with time and the chance to exercise more. When Yvette and I took him to Topley School for a talk about Turtle Gardens and looking after your dog it was only a couple of weeks after his amputation. He was just great with the kids, so quiet and well behaved. He was also a good demo, one girl said she didn’t know dogs could walk on 3 legs, several were horrified that he had been living with a severely damaged foot for months before getting help. Really brought home the need to keep your dog safe and the type of work TG does.
