Is Mom ok or not ???

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — Stan @ 8:05 pm

Gee I am sure that’s a question that we have all asked ourselves one time or another.  Now it is time I have to ask it myself  (is mom ok or not).   I have to admit that I have left all the tough stuff up to mom and dad for years, I am so used to asking hey, mom is so and so ok and if not what do I do . But not now that she is sick I am lost hhhmmm how ever am I going to tell.  Then I remembered a good friend of ours carol’s blog about this sorta thing and I found the link http://www.saintsrescue.ca/wordpress/?p=1455 and I trust her and her opinions then it hit me gee I need to try this on Mom.  She’s more dog then human (we have been told).

tricks of the trade
Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 7:43 pm

quicky, 2 second assessment tools for dogs when you are running out the door late for work to rule out death, injury and unhappiness.

1. if someone tells you that so and so did not eat their lunch…how do you quickly rule out imminent looming death?

offer a kraft cheese slice, if they greedily eat it, they will be ok til you get home.

OK how yuppie is that we don’t even have cheese slices let alone kraft
All I could ask was gee Mom you hungry She wearily replied " not yet but maybe later.." So I had to move on to question two.

2. someone is not weight bearing and holding their leg up in the air. how do you know if they sustained serious injury or are just looking for some sympathetic acknowledgement?

grab a box of peak freen cookies and walk away…if they suddenly follow with all four feet on the ground, chances are good they are not permanently disabled.

HMMMM this isn’t going to work Mom limps all the time. especially in the morning. So I had to move on question three.

3. someone is laying in their bed and giving everyone the “sad” eye…how do you know if they are truly depressed or if maybe they just did something bad that you don’t know about yet?

open the fridge and peer deeply within, a depressed dog would ignore this golden opportunity, a naughty one will have his or her face shoved in there right beside you in 2 seconds or less.

Gee I wonder how many years it has been since mom has done something naughty but man I am NOT going to ask.(maybe carol can)
So I was forced to do the only thing that I knew that would work for sure and went over to the coffee pot and grinded her faverit starbucks beans and brewd a pot of coffee and once I was sure the very pleasnt aroma reacher I asked Mom would you like a cup of coffe in bed (which is a really big treat for her) She wearly replied (not now maybe later) I knew right there we were on our own for the day.

Now I swear I seen carrie-anns head drop when mom answerd, then it grama how much ivemec do I give carrie-ann ??? Grama Willis don’t look good and won’t eat. Oh I didn’t know I had to feed him like that. Mom how do I transfer money I need to go get grampa smokes at the small store. No Mom I haven’t checked the e-mail yet I don’t know it sally-sue’s home check was done this weekend. Yes mom I will watch the puppies when I put them out. I am not sure how much rest she was able to get around here but we all tryed our best to make sure she did.

It really reinforced Kelsey’s and I decision to give up our warm apartment in False Creek (2 minutes from the Sea Wall and 3 minutes from the best junk food store! (7-11) )and move here to help mom and dad was the right choice to make because if we were there and grama was sick we would be worried to death and not be able to do anything. Now we can do something, it might not be just like mom but maybe better because we are learning, and now might be able to do a little more to make the day to day a little lighter. While also reinforcing our understanding and respect for how much she does and how big of a responsibility for as many beings as she takes on and makes it look easy.   We are very happy to try and follow her a mile in her footsteps (one days work!).

  1. lol stan, leave it to a dog rescuing redneck to try a dog assessment on his mother (good problem solving skills to switch to coffee)…please god don’t let him try to de-worm her like everyone else does with a sick dog in rescue!

i truly hope you are feeling better yvette…drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest and if you feel worse or even not much better, get into the (human) clinic for a check.

  3. If she has the cold I am just getting over its a doozy. Keep her warm and watered. Make sure it doesn’t get into her lungs.

  4. C’mon, Mom!!!! Pulling for you. I’m sending positive vibrations–are they reaching you? By that I mean my VERY positive thoughts are being sent to help YOU feel more positive, too! As others have suggested, lots of fluids, rest, and stay warm. Do you have a hot water bottle to cuddle with–on the side where the dogs are not? I recommend one for coziness (less furry, too)! Hope you feel better soon. Keep up the good work, men!
