Turtle Gardens introduces - Simond’s Sanctuary for Cats and Kittens
Turtle Gardens is proud to announce our small contribution to saving cats in our northern area. This is their story :
This is a picture of our little shelter - three spacious kennels with access to an outdoor pen. This was made possible by Kathy Simonds, a local schoolteacher who lost a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. We have taken on the role of sheltering cats and kittens in Burns Lake because there is no other shelter available in our little community. We hold an annual garage sale, close to Valentine’s Day every year, and the people of our community are very supportive and generous to our cause, to keep the shelter going. We vaccinate, deworm, spay and neuter (if old enough), every cat that comes through and ask for a small donation for each adoptee. In 2007, we adopted out 115 cats and kittens!!!
There are two beautiful spayed cats looking for homes as well as 3 - yes 3 litters of kittens in foster care.
This is one of our adult cats up for adoption, actually a long teenager. She came to us in January as a 5 or 6 month old. She has been spayed, vaccinated and dewormed. We have all grown to love her but the clinic staff all have older cats so not sure how to incorporate a youngster into our families, otherwise………………. Tinka is a very beautiful, medium-haired tortoiseshell (although technically she is a calico as she has white on her abdomen which she shows off at every chance). She is initially hesitant around other cats but warms up nicely to her roommates at the shelter with a little time. We don’t know why she hasn’t been chosen for a home yet but I think we have saturated our market here for adult cats (we adopted out 115 cats and kittens in 2007) but more likely is that there is always a more striking cat or kitten in the shelter so she keeps getting overlooked. She is a diamond in the rough though, beautiful personality and very pretty too.

And:
This is our other adult female cat. We got her about three weeks ago and don’t know her age but think she is 4 - 6 years old. She was found on the roadside at Grassy Plains, Southside. She has an old injury to the right side of her face and her right eye is cosmetic i.e. looks fine but is non-visual. She is very sweet and loves to be held and cuddled. We had her in the clinic for a couple of weeks as our shelter was full and she was a “no-trouble” cat, just content to sleep on an office chair and watch the world go by. She is what we call a dilute or pastel torti, pale gray and orange. We presume she is spayed as she has not come into heat and looks like she is altered. She has been vaccinated and dewormed and we are working at getting some weight on her.
Lois
P.S. we have three batches of kittens in foster care, from 3 weeks of age to 6 or 7 months. I will have the foster parents send us some pictures. Thanks for your help with this.

Tinka looks like a clone of my Kitty …and she is the most beautiful cat in the world I think. Torties have such great personalities..they usually like to roll on the floor and want belly rubs, I am glad she is o-kay with other kitties as mine is NOT…or I would have another one for sure. Amber thinks she is a dog which is fine with her…I hope Tinka and your other dilute kitty find homes very soon…

Tinka does precisely that: she rolls on her back and shows you her belly for a tummy rub. She used to be timid and take second place but being here for a while she now vocalises her likes and one of them is that she likes to have ‘roaming time, outside the run’, stays close though. Very affectionate, yet will need a few days to get used to another cat in the household if there is one.

I just wanted to say that the cat shelter looks great and i am so glad that they also have access to an outdoor area. It is always sad to realise that without the kind donantions of people who pass that these very much needed places would be hard to find.
I wish you continued success with your future work.
