How Turtle Gardens got its name!
The story is not philosophical or trendy or even serious - actually it is quite funny. Way back in 1987 before I even got shanghaied into becoming an animal control officer we lived in a trailer on the last street in Granisle. There was a storm sewer in front of our yard. I put a garden around it, then looked at it and placed shaped rocks to look like a head, feet and tail of a turtle. Our neighbor Kit Koo painted the round part in a pattern to look like a turtle. The flowers were pansies and they were quite happy looking. So when I refused to kill the dogs in the pound and started rehoming them I need a name for my adoptions. I thought of Turtle Gardens as I walked home looking at my turtle garden. My first logo was “slow and steady gets the home” and “a home for every pet” then when Davey built his first website (Petbits) and wanted an internet logo for it he said describe TG in 6 or less words and I said “the shelter with heart” - our turtle with the red heart shaped shell was born as our logo!! This was in 1996! It got Dave his first job in Vancouver! And I have had a special website ever since that Dave develops for me. Without Dave and Stan there would be no blog - so thank you sons.
And the second question - what are the new puppies. Well…… they are part of a litter of 11 puppies!!
Five of the puppies are in the backyard of the home they come from. Two are with another family that have no idea how to feed or look after puppies. I have had several phone calls about them today. One lady in particular is in a panic. The rest of the litter are males. I have said that they can come in here - they just need a ride and of course the funding to look after them. Or Dave can get them when he comes home. They will need vaccinations, worming and socializing until they are old enough to be adopted - we always vaccinate our puppies twice so they are protected before adoption. what are they? They are Lake Babine Nation Specials! Some have short legs like the new fellow - he also lived at that home. Mom is medium sized and all black. A husky was supposed to be involved - who knows how many dad there are!!

Thank you for answering my questions.
What an interesting story on how Turtle Gardens got it’s name.
And the little specials are so sweet and so is the Prince.

I am also happy to know how TG got it’s name. I have had people say to me that they didn’t realize there was a rescue for Turtles…
Whew have fun with all those puppies Yvette as I know they are not your favorite to deal with. At least puppies usually draw lots of interest…

Prince Henry is a great name! Now all those pups will have to be named soon, I don’t know how you keep
track. They are so precious!

I really enjoy answering questions about TG and its origins. The male puppies are missing!
We are trying to find out where they are. Now that is worrisome.
And another postscript to what are the puppies? - the short legged black female and the long legged brown female have short tails!! Now how quirky is that?

I was wondering how you came to the name “Turtle Gardens”!
Loved the story Yvette.
Sweet puppies….I hope you come across the wee males missing….

Why? Why? don’t people spay and neuter their pets, then there would not be so many in need of homes.
Why? can’t people give them proper food and shelter.
Why can’t they give them love and a place with the family instead of left to live a lonely life in the back yard.
Why? Do they get left outside in the freezing winter.
These questions are annoying to me because to me and You and all you other Animal Lovers it is a given that you give your animal companion these things and you will get a whole lot back
Poor dogs it upsets me every time I read about the new dogs and puppies that come your way homeless and I am angered at all the irresponsible people.
So, once again, I say, Thank God for you at Turtle Gardens, all your helpers and the people that notice the dogs in distress/need and do something.
