Turtle Gardens

If you wait 15 minutes – the weather will be different! It has rained, snowed, has been very windy, is sunny and gloomy – all in one day! It is relatively mile tho – what a bonus. The dogs are busy playing outside but they are also slipping and sliding on the so very icy ground. It is a danger to us two legged critters too. And Gunnar! He is walked very slowly around the yard – he would prefer to run and play – just a few more days big guy! He is healing very well and he continues to be such a love. What a nice dog!

Gunnar and Issaic

The salukis remain – they are so destructive if alone – severe separation anxiety. And though Issaic is now housebroken, he still has a hard time learning. Is there a home with no expectations for a dog like him? He would most likely be an excellent companion for a playful dog. He is affectionate with those he knows and likes to go for walks. He is sleek and elegant just not very bright. He has never been alone so I don’t know how he would react but his close family sure have bad bad anxiety.

The sharpei pups – girls have generalized demodex. And because they have white feet (possibly collie in there) they cannot be treated with ivomec. So we have to go holistic for them. Immune boosters, grain-free food (that will be difficult to keep them out of the regular dog food – isolation perhaps), inferon tabs, selsum blue baths, lots of intensive hands on treatment for these lovely girls. Just a small glitch in their adoption plans!

The missing hair around the eyes is a first sign of demodex.

Gunnar update at Turtle Gardens

January 28th, 2009

Warmer weather is very nice. -8 is much more pleasant to work in. I have Spring on my window sill – a pot of crocuses are blooming – reminding of warmer days ahead. Thank you Daves.

Gunnar came home last evening. He is so very much better!! He wants to play already. He is left with a stump which leaves his behind well rounded – it is very hard to see that he is even missing his leg. He gets around well already – and he wants to go!! Sorry Gunnar – you have 10 days of restricted activity. Gunnar ate a bowl of kibble and canned food, drank his water, discovered that cushions feel good and slept the night away. He is taking antibiotics for infection – his leg has been broken for quite a while and metacam for pain. This morning he went out on a flexi and tried to play!! He feels good.

We received $800 in his fund. His bill came to $693.09. (The discount is larger than the bill!! Thank you Dr Mike and the staff at Babine Pet hospital – you went above and beyond for our fellow – we thank you) He has been neutered as well. On Tuesday he goes back to Babine for a check up and stitches removal – he will get his vaccinations then as well. All of his expenses are covered – thank you so much for your support. Gunnar is an awesome companion!

And now the promised pictures of Momma Dog – she needs a name as do her pups!

And her son:

I missed the little black and white – tomorrow!

Updates at Turtle Gardens

January 27th, 2009

The weather is warming up!! -5 our high today – yahoo. Saturday saw the mercury dip BELOW -40 now that was very cold. Then Sunday -35 still too cold to sit at my desk in a very cold room. Today is pleasant – no more excuses. So updates on the new pups.

For Silken – the little karelian girl is very sweet – she loves to cuddle, play and sit close to me. She is not quite as smart as her silver sister about asking for the door but she is pretty darn good! She will be an awesome buddy and companion.

The little silver girl is a very very sweet and cute wrinkle girl. She has wrinkles everywhere – on her legs, back and face too. She has little sharpei eyes and ears. She is gorgeous in her silver tabby cat suit! She is super smart too. She asks for the door with whines and yips and if no one responds right away she goes over to Dave and looks him in the face and runs back to the door – how cool is that?

The little boy has moved out with Mom. They are sleeping in beds on the porch – mom is very shy and mistrust humans. She will be coming in soon though – they always do. Lots of food and water outside, lots of toys too. Now that it is warmer I can go out and work with her. She runs from Dave :( Even when he has the treat bucket. Poor little soul – she looks a lot like her silver daughter – small ears, but a pointier nose, silver colour and about the size of a border collie or karelian. just a nice size.

Gunnar is coming home today. He has lost his leg but he is pain free. The bones were too far gone to pin and plate. He was injured quite a while ago. Some people don’t deserve such nice dogs. I will have pictures tomorrow.

And updates of the 9 bullie pups and the spare! Thank you Jean for taking the pictures and thank you Sam for posting them on petfinder. And a BIG THANK YOU to Emily for fostering these so very busy but sweet puppies!

In memory of Lily – December 4, 1988- January 25, 2009

January 26th, 2009

Our oldest little girl passed away quietly surrounded by her fur and human family at my feet. I am still sleeping in my easy chair so my fur family sleeps all around my chair. The privileged few sleep under the covers at my feet – Sweetpea, Grizzly, Lily and sometimes Redman. Lily stopped eating and decided to just sleep with occasional drinks o water. She did not seem in distress or pain so I let her sleep with her family. I gave her metacam just in case on advice from the vet. She passed away in her sleep during the evening. Rest in peace little one – you were a very good dog.

Lily arrived at Turtle Gardens from a Southside collector. She had seizures so he wanted her gone so my friend Ann scooped her up and brought her in. Lily was mostly feral – she didn’t trust humans. It took almost a year for her to jump on my bed. Then she discovered standing with her little paws on my leg at supper time got her tidbits and there she was every meal! Lily had character! Our vets decided that during her evaluation that she was 8 or 9 years old, she had seizures and she had a grade 4 heart murmur – she would not live long. Spaying was not an option -so we watched her carefully for the short time she had left – that was in 1997. Lily fooled us all. She lived happily and securely in her environment. Lily leaves a very big hole in our hearts.

Another cold and busy day at Turtle Gardens

January 24th, 2009

It is positively chilly out there today -25 in the morning ; warming up to -18 with the sun FINALLY shining thru the tulip stained glass in the front window!! We lose the sun from early December to late January because of the hills not that there is much sun anyways in early winter. It was wonderful to look up and find sunshine in my eyes – what joy! Morning was good with warmth in the house, very good coffee brewing and just one phone asking for advice with her intact out of control untrained new “free to a good home” small dog. What he needs is a neuter and then consistency, boundaries and lots and lots of treats for good behaviour. Just because he is over a year old doesn’t mean he knows anything. He needs to be treated like a pup who knows nothing. ‘Cuz in reality that is what he is – an overgrown pup who knows nothing – he needs baby steps to learn that a good behaviour that can be “treated”. He needs to learn “how” to learn. I outlined what I would do and she thought she could do that too. She is willing to try and a little dog has a chance to keep his new home. Fingers and paws crossed!!

Then later today the dogs we have been waiting for since early December have finally arrived. The sharpei mixes and their mom came in. They are not what I expected!! But then they rarely are.

Two are little girls under 5 months – they still have baby teeth. They are covered in bites/scars. Their lives were awful. The boy is bigger and though he has a few bites , he is in better condition.

This is the one who has a very wrinkled face and nose like a sharpei. She is very sweet.

This one looks like a border collie or karelian. She is the same size as her sister.

The little boy is handsome!

Dave didn’t take pictures of mom. She is gray like the first pup and has a face like the male. She looks more like Moon than a Tallulah!! She is very skittish and darted back outside the first time the door opened. I have to check to see if she is pregnant – she must of been in heat already – the pups are of an age that makes it a possibility. Time will tell.
