Speuters, Vaccinations and new arrivals – another busy HOT day at Turtle Gardens

July 31st, 2009

I have decided that I don’t like this summer at all! It is way too hot. It does cool down – after 10 pm when the sun finally goes down. The dogs and humans are not happy campers – we are all cranky!! Our guest – Porter was a very good boy this sleepover – until last night!! The heat was just too much and the obnoxious teenager Noah got in his face once too often. So time-out. Sorry big fella – you are just too big and powerful!! He was fine after it cooled down. And Noah learned a valuable lesson as well. It was a lot of noise but no blood. He is much more respectful.

The early morning run was fairly pleasant. It was 12 above, and cool. The two victims were close by – Gressie and Kabookie. Gressie has a prospective home in North Vancouver! How cool is that!
gressie

Gressie is 36 pounds so a nice medium size. She is in good health but needs confidence building – we knew that!! But she has really proGressed!

Kabookie is also a shy guy. He weighs all of 26 pounds so smaller than Gressie more like Charlie and Curtis (he reminds me of Curtis!) He is th esame age – 10 months!! He is also healthy and ready for his own family!
Wilson and Kabookie!

Speuter is usually pound pick up day and this was no exception! Turtle Gardens welcomes a NAMELESS teenager collie/golden retriever? She is friendly, good natured and has moved in as if she has always been here. She will be an fun, active family companion.

And then I met Zena. Her friends brought her as her mom had to leave suddenly after a family breakup. Zena is a middle aged girl who adores kids! She is medium sized, gentle as can be – probably a lab mix of some kind -she sure is nice what an awesome family companion she will eb for a lucky adopter. Turtle Gardens welcomes Zena.

The two pups went in for their vet checks and vaccinations. Emily weighs in at 11 pounds at 14 weeks while Emiril weighs 16 pounds. Our vets figure they are related to Kabookie! They will be smaller dogs!

The TG Bus is Broken :(

July 30th, 2009

A few days ago Stan was coming home from Prince George when a moose ran out in front of him. There was no way to stop. Stan and the salukis are ok, the van not and the moose died. He was going up a large hill – so quite slow – the air bags did NOT deploy. But the damage is extensive. Dave went down to PG to meet him, and the van was towed to our niece’s home. Her friend is a body shop and mechanic – he did pull the huge dent out of the windshield brace??? And checked her out – she is fixable! Thank doG. With new parts we are looking at $6,000 but we think if we can find them used parts would suit. Another wrinkle in TG’s life.

New adoptions

July 29th, 2009

Oh my gosh, was I ever sick yesterday!! I don’t know what it was but I had a high fever, nausea, aches all over and I just wanted to sleep. Thanks to my family I did. And I am pretty much back to normal today. I think it could be a combination of the horrible, horrible heat and whatever else I had. I really don’t like such hot weather and neither do my dogs!!

The TG Bus went down Monday night with adoptions early and I mean early Tuesday morning! Thank you Stan!!!

The first one to meet his family was Grizz – and he was an instant hit. He is such a nice boy! Brian called me and will be sending pictures soon – he lives in Kamloops.

Next was Sugar and Charlee in North Vancouver – Stan drove to each location as our usual adoption center is full! So here is an update from Sugar!

Heyas!

I just wanted to thank you all for taking care of Sugar and bringing her home safely to me. We renamed her Roxy because my boyfriend had a dog named Sugar and was reluctant to repeat pet names. Roxy is absolutely wonderful and sweet, just as I expected her to be. She has settled in quite nicely and Quincy has been quite curious as to who this new family member is. They are getting along rather well, although sometimes Quincy hisses when he feels a bit shy, but I know he will be cuddling up to her in no time. Sugar is very good at handling the situation and I’m so grateful for that. I’ve attached some photos I took after a few hours of getting settled in and I’ll be sending some updates in the future to keep you all posted. We are so happy to have her here!

Also, I was wondering what would be the best way to send the crate back to the vet clinic? I also had to ask about the vet paperwork as I have not received any with Roxy. My boyfriend and I are going to be travelling up to Smithers the 3rd week of August, so if it’s more convenient, we can stop by and drop off the crate and pick up the papers, or whichever way seems easiest.

Thanks again for your time,
Shannon

And then over to visit Gloria who was waiting for Charlee – my oh so busy, funny but full of mischief – Charlee:

Hi Yvette,

Met up with Stan and have been settling Charlee into the pack. Asha as
expected is not giving her much notice unless Charlee gets in her face with
too much excitement. It’s all just a warning from the old girl. Tessa has
surprised me. She is practically attached to my leg and was not very polite
to Charlee while I was preparing their breakfast.

Oh well, just need to keep on top of it and they’ll work it out.

My office is hot but they all are hovering. Charlee has already tried to
take one of my shoes out to the yard but I saved it. Tess never went after
shoes but Asha did when she was a pup.

I’m sure I’ll have lots of stories to send you but I can see it’s going to
be a lot more exciting around here! Pictures will follow soon.

Thank you again and take care,

Gloria
Here’s her first picture at home. What a sweet happy girl she is!

Thank you again,
G.

Then over to Burnaby to see Jim and Misty (a sherriff dog!) and introduce Jenny!

Hi Yvette,

Stan arrived here this morning with Jenny and Finnigan. Cynda and Tom brought Teya and Gryphon over and Misty had the most fun in the back yard. She was so happy to have some four legged friends to visit with.

Jenny is a beautiful dog and she is going to do really well here. She came out of the van and leaned on me and put her paw on my leg and gave a bunch of kisses. She is very calm and gentle but a little unsure of things. It will be so nice to see her blossom when she knows this is her forever home.

Thank you so much. Will give you updates and see you at the TG reunion.

Take care.

Jim

ps I have a bunch of pixs but could not resize them all quickly, so have just sent the one pix for now. Will send more later.

Jenny

And last in Richmond was Finnegan – my sleeping partner – what a very nice pup!

Hi Yvette,

Just wanting you to know that Finnegan arrived safely. It was instant love! He is a darling!!!!
He is crashed at my feet as I write, as he has been socializing and getting loved up by all that have met him!
Thank you so much for putting us together..I am so grateful! He is the perfect little boy for us.
I will send more pictures as they come…later on we might see if he is a water dog ang give him a bath to cool down!
Your son is a real gem…very thoughtful and knowledgeable.
Thanks so much for such an amazing experience!
Pictures below!
Best,

Libby

So how cool was that!! All updated right away!! I love Happy Endings!!

Dog days of summer at Turtle Gardens

July 26th, 2009

Dog days are hot days! Days for lazing around the beach – it is too hot. I hate hot. I find it too hot these days and the long range forecast is for more HOT SUNNY days to come. I am not happy. Hot makes me cranky and the dogs too. They play and eat until early morning by 10 am they are all sprawled out on the floor in front of the fans. They don’t stir again until after 9 pm!! I want to watch my TV shows and relax as it cools off – they want to play!! We compete as the noise levels rise – TV versus growls and play cacophony! I chase them outside – they come back in. Around and around we go until finally peace reigns again and they are finally tired out! What a life.

Updates – first from Gemma Joy!

Hi Yvette,

I have to tell you about Gemma Joy’s new purpose in life:

She has adopted our two new Guinea pigs, Archie and Edith, as her “babies”. She is absolutely obsessed with them, and is very protective of them. When they squeal and talk, she becomes very alert, and stays close by.

When she was introduced to her babies, nose to nose, she licked them ever so gently. It was very sweet.

Gem spends a lot of time with the Guinea pigs, and she has also been bitten by the zoomie bug. It’s quite hysterical when she gets a bad case of the zoomies. I don’t think she knew much about play in her old life,

Gemma now weighs 20 lbs., is in great shape, eats a fully raw diet, and shows no signs of her disease. We’ll take that for as long as we can get it.

And now Fritzi!

Hi Yvette,

It’s been three weeks now and I’ve settled in. I know I made my new mommy very happy last night when she had a whole bunch of people over for a BBQ and I behaved like a perfect gentledog. I fit right in and everyone was amazed at my good manners. I was so good that my mommy didn’t have to tie me up or anything. I found out that when I stick around and be nice, I get a bone to chew on, and boy, do I like that!

We have a routine now all worked out. My mommy goes to bed quite late, so after a quick trip outside around 11 pm we go to bed, me in my kennel, and she in her bed, same room. At around 7am a quick “do busy” outside at around 7am and then straight back to the bedroom where I can now sleep for a couple more hours ON the bed. Great eh? Ever since I have slept in the kennel at night I’ve been totally house clean. Mommy loves that.

After we get up again, it’s coffee and feeding time. Shortly after that we go for a walk or a run on the beach. I run and dig, mommy walks. I wonder if she knows that I get all wet and sandy just to be enveloped into a soft towel for a rub down when we get back, I love that. Then mommy starts her work. I am always a couple of steps behind her or lying beside her. In the afternoon we go for another walk. If I was good we play frisbee, my favourite! After her dinner I get more food and we go for another short walk. The neighbours know who I am and I think they like me, they think I am cute, so they don’t mind me coming over and checking up on them.

Yep, life’s good! Fritzi

Best wishes for your new ventures, Yvette.

The faces of Turtle Gardens

July 24th, 2009

It is way too hot! Summer is green and beautiful and colorful and way way too hot for me and half my dogs. my big girl Shaney was almost given her eternal rest before her time simply because with all the recent deaths I thought she had cancer or a stroke too. She yelped when she went to ge tup and started panting and whining. I saw thta she had lost weight and she wouldn’t eat. I called my vets and they suggested metacam and to book an appointment wiht Driftwood for a home euth as Kr Kye was there today. So I did and an hour later she was napping. An hour after that she got up and ate a bit of food. So I didn’t make the appointment. The next day she was panting so another dose of metacam and she ate again. Another day and she ate first without metacam but I noticed she wasn’t going down the stairs. Her back leg was stiff and had an awkward gait – memory stirred. Then I clued in – she reminded me of Hercules! I watched her closely – and it dawned on me – Shaney had blown her knee! She needs more lakota and regular pain meds. Today she walking ok – very slow and swinging her back leg but is mobile and eating. She is too slow and old to worry about a crate for confinement. She doesn’t move around much anyways. She went down the three steps a half hour ago. It isn’t time yet for Shaney. What a blessing!
