    Shiva, Now Bellezza, is Playing

    Hi Yvette & Dave,
Thank you so much for helping all the critters. Shiva was smiling as soon as we got her into the SUV – she was glad to get away from the pandemonium. Some dogs thrive on it, others not so much. I changed her name to Bellezza (Bel lates’ ah – Italian for beauty). I wanted a strong sounding name, since Maremmas are very strong-minded – absolutely necessary for a flock guardian! We just came back from a walk to the park where she played with a big rescue dog. She didn’t want to come for a walk this morn, & I know better than to force any critter. She ate her dinner with my other 2 in the kitchen last night, but this morn she got up, walked into the kitchen & then lay back down. I remembered the other Maremmas needing to be fed on their beds with the bowl right between their front legs. Mission successful.
Can you please tell me if Bellezza’s pyometra was before or after being spayed? Do you know if she had one litter, & if so, how many pups?
Dear Bellezza loves my 3 young cats – very gentle in meeting each one while she was lying on my lap. Soon, she’ll love guarding her big flock. My home is perfect too for a circling Maremma – she goes around & around thru the doorways in a circle. At 1st, she was timid about stnading in the kitchen for her meals. The usual Maremma thing was for me to feed the Maremma fosters while they lay on their bed, & I put the bowl between their front paws. She only took 2 meals like that – yippie, a quick-to-adjust princess. I will send pics when I can in a couple of weeks.
A huge thanks again for all your heartful work.

It truly is a joy when a scared dog starts playing. The Maremma smile is so great to see too. She is easier & easier to go on a leash as I never make a Maremma go in a straight line. Bellezza does constant circles – easier on me than it sounds. She’s on my right & my other 2 are on my left, so easy to have my right hand over my head when she decides to circle.
She’s investigating toys too, but has yet to pick one up. New things every day! She knows she’s loved – my other girls tell her how much I love them.
More to come as Bellezza learns.
    Thanks! Cricket

    Hello Cricket,
I am so very happy to hear about our Shiva. She is very near and dear to my heart. She was so terribly frightened by life when she arrived. To see her blossom and finally reach out to her own home is inspiring. She has such a beautiful gentle soul. Her pyometra was in December. She was spayed in April after she had gained confidence and weight – she was horribly skinny on arrival. I have no idea if she had pups but the vets don’t think so from the condition of her uterus. Thank you so much for the update and for giving her her chance at the good life.
Sounds like Bellezza is home! I am so thrilled to hear that. You have reaffirmed why we do what we do and you have made my heart sing.
    Sincerely, Yvette

    Rook’s Video Update

    Hello fellow puppy lovers…
Our friend Rook is coming out of her shell. We met at the park when she first arrived and I had a grand plan to take her for a pack walk but Rook had other ideas. She was completely shut down and would not move an inch. She’s way too heavy to carry so she and I laid in the grass in the lovely sun while my dogs went off for a walk with a friend. She remained too scared and tired to move for the rest of the day but brightened up on Sunday morning when she began to take an interest in my big dog, Stella (all dogs love her). By this morning (monday) she was following me around but still shut down if I tried to lead her on a leash as you will see by the one video I have posted Within half hour, we had had her walking happily on leash – thanks again to Stella – it’s always great to have a gentle dog to teach the others.
Rook is herself a gentle, soft soul and she is going to be a great pet for the right family.

    A Family Reunion

Nancy Bain sent in a wonderful picture of her niece Leslie with her Turtle Gardens dog Bizkit (formerly Biscuit) on left, and of Nancy’s own TG girl Willow.
She tells us Willow is happy because she got to play with Bizkit.
Bizkit is grinning because he has momentarily escaped playing with Willow.

    more updates fromTurtle Gardens

Third time is a charm I hope! Some days writing the blog is really difficult. The words disappear into cyberspace never to be seen again. The wrong button pushed and poof – everything is gone. thank doG for good coffee this pot is a thank you to Linda L! And coupled with the beautiful blooming white azalea goes far in settling my frustrations. Thank you so much for the plant – I really do love blooms in my window. The white plant sits near the gorgeous miniature red rose plant Dave gave me for my birthday. A few minutes of looking at their beauty, a sip of really good coffee and I am ready to try again.

Dave and Brian have spent the night in Cache Creek. They met up with Chris and TG Alumni Molly to hand over little Darryn. He was such a good traveller – he sat on Dave’s knee looking out the window. He is always ready for a party! Good luck little one – you will have loads of adventures in your new life.

The guys will be moseying on home with their full load. I will be very glad to see Dave home again. This is really a two person job. Even with 23 dogs gone there is still a lot of furry bodies to care for – including the 14 puppies that range in age from 7 weeks, 9 weeks, 12 weeks and Rona at 21 weeks. They are fed special food twice a day plus access to the always full bins of dog food. Devi is fed her dehydrated raw three times a day – sitting on my lap. Pails of water go out to the two dog yards several times a day as well as keeping the bins full of dog food. Cleaning the house is incidental as is answering the phone and checking emails. There is no time to bored at Turtle Gardens!

And now updates – First Daisy in Nanaimo:

    Hey everyone,
Daisy is doing well. She’s skittish with new things. Denise, thank you for your words of advice on how to get her to integrate. There have been no more fear fights from her towards my dogs. She’s okay so far with cats. She got a good swat from my cat Toonces from being too interested. We’re going to try to leave her for an hour or so tomorrow with a Kong with some peanut butter in it.
Anyway, I’m just rambling. Today was a long day, but a good one. I got Sugar and Spike to Bev. I was super tired and spaced out when I saw Bev and her husband. In hindsight, I hope I didn’t come across as rude. I’ve attached a facebook link for pictures I took today to update the Petfinder bio if you want. Once I get to know Daisy, I’ll write up some more of a bio on her.

    Talk with you soon.
Thank you everyone. You are all amazing people.

    And Casper:

Here is Casper after his long journey from Topley,  what a sweet and gentle dog.  After a walk along the paths of Deer Lake, meeting and greeting all with gentle calmness, he had a sleep and then off to Dirty Doggz Bathhouse in North Van for a clean and nail clip.  He was amazing no trouble at all, however there is now a lot less of his winter coat weighing him down.  I have only fostered or had small dogs but so far he is a dream.  Thank you for sending him and knowing he was a gentle small dog in a big frame.

And BJ Thomas from the last TG Bus Run was adopted yesterday!

We are very happy! BJ is doing great, very comfortable and happy to be with
    us.
We came home and let him wander around the apartment. He was calm and
curious, very sweet. He gave me a big hug and we lay down on his doggie bed-
looks like he totally accepted me! Then we went for a walk to a local mall,
passing a community center on the way. I had to run in and use the bathroom,
so I had no choice but to hand him over to Ruben. When I returned a few
minutes later, they were simply the best of friends! I was so surprised, but
it was true! Then we both walked him, each taking the lead at different
times. We also spent time in the community centre park, rolling around in
the grass and having a great time. All of this would not have been possible
without the amazing care and attention given by the foster parents, Denise
and Alessandro, and of course by the fact that he was saved by Yvette in the
first place. We are all so grateful, that we cannot put in words other than
THANK YOU and the photos show it all! You saved one hell of a good dog.

We will send you updates and drop by one time for a wee visit! (of course to
finish the paper work as well).

    With gratitude and much respect,
    June and Ruben

Before and after pictures of Maxie!

Yvette, when you told me Maxie was in fact a little dog underneath all that hair I really had a hard time believing it….but the proof is in the haircut.  She’s such a sweet little thing and for her first day I did feel quite guilty taking her to the groomer to be shaved down….but as I tried to tell her, it really needed to be done and she was gonna feel a whole lot better afterwards.    (A big THANK YOU THANK YOU to Linda D’s daughter Bonnie and her coworkers as Studio One Dog Grooming in Tsawwassen – they’re at 5669 – 12th Ave in case you need a great groomer!….they worked as a team to help make Maxie a beautiful girl)  As usual..more pics and stories will be on my blog.   In the meantime, here’s a few pics to show her journey today.  What gentle little soul.

    Another Turtle Gardens Update

It definitely is hot today! +17 and sunny, not a cloud in the very blue skies. Hopefully it will drop like a stone tonight and cool off. And it hopefully will not last long. It is supposed to +20 on Monday!! Not good for the floodplain.

Another update. This one if from Pika – fostered by Emily:

.It’s a darn good thing I wasn’t the one to foster Dianamo. I nearly
just took her home with me anyway!
Pika is doing well. Beckett is smitten! Besides the two older dogs, he
hasn’t had a foster sibling that hasn’t tried to maul or mount him in
    awhile.
    Updates soon on miss Pika-pants.

    Best wishes,
    Emily

And little Sparkle foster by Anna and Dash:

    Hola Mama Yvette & Denise,

Sparkle rode in car great. Sat up front with her head up and nose to the wind (inside car car). Still in my arms when I got out of the car, she met my landlord who was doing maintenance, and a male neighbour, who coming up from behind and thinking I was holding Dash, just reached out and gave her head a rub. Their similarity in colour is going to be confusing around here. She met the resident animals in the yard. She was cautiously curious. We let her investigate the yard, then brought her in for her bath. She was docile and seemed to enjoy the whole experience, even unflinchingly accepting of the removal of the hard as wood tear lump. I put her in the settle area to dry off and rest. She went inside the kennelcab and tested out her new squeek toy and stuffy. I put out some food and water, and boy she was hungry. She sat in the settle area (gate open) quietly for a bit, then decided to come out and have a look around.

She decided she wanted up on the couch and enjoyed a nice chest rub from The Man. She’d just fallen asleep when a couple of male friends came over. One of them held her and though she was nervous for about a minute, was fine. She is a little worried about being approached, but seems to find her own way to be near us and be a little snuggle bunny. This little girl is not going to have any trouble getting over her shyness. Sensing she is still a bit timid, Guy and Dash have been letting her have some space. She’ll get to meet Bijoux tomorrow and maybe she’d prefer playing with a lady dog.

Here she is, all clean, napping and dressed in a yellow t-shirt, a delight for anyone who enjoys clothing their dog. Dash has an appointment with the groomers on Tuesday and i’ll see if she can be fit in for a bit of a tidy and a style. Right now she’s looking like a cross between Arte Johnson & William H. Macy.
That’s it for now, thought you’d like to know she is a-ok. We’ll go for a pack walk, and introduce her to the neighbourhood as soon as she’s finished her nap.

    And Toby formerly Little Man:

    Hi Yvette,

I want to let you know that Toby (you knew him as Little man) has settled in wonderfully.    He is such a dear wee doggie and I love him excessively.    He and Gussie, the dachshund from Saints, have bonded and now sleep cuddled up together.  We walk in Pacific Spirit Park almost every day, Toby loves meeting and playing with all the other dogs in there.    He and I are very bonded to each other, he comes as soon as I call him, never wanders far from my heels and is extremely responsive to my voice.   Thank you, and Lisa B, for taking such good care of him before he came to me.  I cannot imagine my life without him now.

With love and gratitude from Marie

the first update for Turtle Gardens!

There is a SUN alert on my weather icon this morning!! It is already +12 and supposed to get very warm today. And above freezing tonight. Melting time for the mountains and fear from flooding. The catch basins are lower but not empty so there is very little room for the extra water. i will keep you posted.

Dave arrived in Delta by 6 am today. He and Brian grabbed a few zzz’s while waiting for the extensive crew of volunteers. Thank you so much Lisa B and Denise and all our volunteers including Shannon our resident trainer and Linda D – there every TG Bus Run to help. You all make our lives so much richer and smooth.  He was on the road back to Cache Creek by 10.30  – so how cool is that! The TG Bus is fully loaded with crates for the CAAT program  and supplies as well as 2 dogs in serious need of rehabilitation. They were rescued from India both street dogs that have never been given the opportunity to be a dog. They need our “canine psychology” type of program. They need to leave their background as scavengers/scroungers/thieves/feral dog life behind and become dogs. Their names are Bodhi and Spot. Dave tells me that they look a lot like Sasito our Mexican street dog. Street dogs are pretty much feral dogs and need to be rehabilitated before they can be family pets. Also coming on the return trip is a pup coming to boot camp to also learn dog skills. He was found as a very young puppy and raised in isolation with people and not dogs in China. He needs to learn how to be a dog. He has a home and will go back next dog run. Finally Darryn is riding shotgun on Dave’s  knee to Cache Creek to meet up with his new mom Chris and TG Alumni Molly- Olly. Drive safe guys.

And our first update – from the description it is Donald! He chose his own foster to adopt family!

    Hi Yvette & Dave,

    Thank you again for everything!
Dave, it was nice to meet you today. :)

This was our first experience of a dog run with a rescue, watching all of the dogs unload and hearing their stories was quite overwhelming.

We walked Daryn for Lisa B while we waited for the “D” pups to unload, he is adorable and incredible sweet, his new family will be very lucky to have a special little dog. He will be a quick learner as he is very attentive, and he loves to lean in close for affection.

One by one the “D” pups unloaded. It was quick confusing as to which was which, Darren, Donald? Donald, Darren? With Douglas it was obvious.

The first “D” boy out of the van was frozen, completely terrified. We’ve never seen a dog do that before. It was heartbreaking. Within a few minutes he relaxed and sat quietly with us (he ended up being the thickest build of the boys). This boy is quite calm and stoic.

Then came Douglas, with his little white paws. He came over to snuggle with his brother, to find comfort. He was vocal and more expressive.

Then came the last “D” pup, he came over pushed his way through his brothers and put his paw on my leg, and stuck his face in mine. Hmmm…..was this the confident boy you had suggested for us? I stepped back and move away, he followed me, I move away again, he followed and then laid down on my feet. I think the roles of who was doing the choosing who had just been flipped!

We sat with them for a while longer, really not sure which to choose, two completely different dogs. Given that the one boy had made a statement earlier we figured that was the way to go.

So we’re not totally sure which “D” pup we have, but it was clear who wanted to come home with us. ;) We have the pup who has a bit of white on his chin, and definitely the smallest of the boys.

After a lot of noise for the first 5 minutes in the car he settled and fell asleep. When we removed him from the car and tried to get him for a pee he immediately headed for his crate. He’s set up camp in there and is sleeping peacefully now.

    We’ll keep you posted.
    Sending puppy love from Vancouver,
    Karley & Elise

The TG Bus is on the Road again!

The days leading up to the TG Bus Run are hectic, chaotic, stressful, extraordinarily busy. The dogs sense something up in the air too. today I realized that I needed desperately to be calm. Not an easy thing to do with noisy dogs. So I sat quietly at the table with a hot cup of tea and my book. Dave was gone to Houston to meet up with Jaycee’s foster mom. Jaycee was the first loaded as she was already in the bus! Calm energy leads to calm loading up.

    Jaycee's foster is in Burnaby

She waited patiently while the guys got the shelf back up in the van for the small dogs, taped plastic all over the walls and floor then added sweet smelling straw for bedding.Annie and Sparkle were first up into the top bunk.

Annie's foster is in North Vancouver

    Sparkle's foster is in Vancouver

Next was Sugar and Spike. They are going to our favorite Bev! Ginger is not “home” ready.

    Sugar Spike and Ginger

Last for the upper bunk is Midnight! She has her own family waiting for her in Vancouver!

    Midnight

Then Dave started with easy dogs right in the yard. Cheyenne has a foster in North Vancouver.

    Cheyenne

RT2 was very happy to follow Dave out the gate. He walks very well on leash! RT2 is fostered in Burnaby.

    RT2 and Rook

Tarot was next. He too walks well on leash. He is going to foster in Vancouver.

    Tarot

Sid is ready for her adventure in the big city -  her foster is in Vancouver.

    Sid

Shiva has found her very own home in East Vancouver. How cool is that!

    Shiva and little Jerome

The 4 “D” pups have fosters too – in Squamish, Vancouver and Victoria!

    D pups

Rook was a bit tentative but she went to the bus for her chance at the “good life” in Victoria.

    Rook

Robin was behind her sister. Her foster is in Squamish

    ROBIN

Her mom Pika was next. She is going to Emily in Victoria!

    Pika

our beautiful red doberman pincher is going to foster in Vancouver.

    Lupa and Paizley

Pogo strolled jauntily down to the Bus for his next big adventure. His foster is in Vancouver.

    Pogo

Daisy walked quietly and was very pleased to see her pups were in the van too! Her foster is with 2 doppelgangers (twin look-alikes) in Nanaimo.

    Daisy

Last but not least Maxie was finally rounded up after playing with Bear (Dave’s sister) during the load up.Maxie is going to Lisa B’s Finishing School in Richmond!

My favorite pic of Maxie with Charlotte.

I went back in and checked my emails. Holy cow – stop the van. I moved as fast as I could and hollered, Hey Dave – load up Casper too! A last minute foster came up for wonderful, mellow Casper. He is so “home” ready. Casper’s foster is in Burnaby.

    Casper

So now I can sit down with my well earned cup of tea and relax. Safe driving guys!
