Neuter day at Turtle Gardens

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 8:53 am

It was too early to get up but without an alarm clock I couldn’t chance falling asleep again! Dave will pick up an alarm clock today - he has a list! Ben was in the common room tethered so he could fast without the puppies having to fast as well! He was not a happy camper - he prefers to come and go as he pleases and does prefer to sleep outside some nights. He failed cat 101 - he really wanted cat sushi. He has a very good application though from a long time malamute owner who lost his old mal 5 months ago. He hikes 60 to 80 kilometers in bush and rangeland every week - Ben will be well exercised and well trained too. So off to Burns Lake today for his little operation, and vaccinations. He will be ready for out next transport soon - very soon. Thank you Beverely of Malamute rescue for sponsoring his neuter.

The fence is looking very skookum! Now that is what I call a fence!

Another new face

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 3:25 pm

The sun is shining today though it is colder than the past couple of days. Work on the fence is starting - soon no dogs will be able to jump over, dig under, climb or go through the fence to freedom. What a joy that will be - no more greeters!

Late yesterday afternoon after dark actually Linda arrived with a big terrier mix - she must weigh 40 pounds! and looks like a wolfhound with short legs. She is just under a year old and has already had a litter - the pups were all given away. The whole puppy experience was too much for the owners so Mozart had to go - no more puppies. Eventhough we offered to spay her so she could stay with her family they opted to keep a male puppy. Turtle Gardens welcomes Mozart - she doesn’t respond to it (thank doG) so she deserves a feminine name - one that reflects her pure gold temperament - another really really nice dog!

And here are pictures of Ketherington showing his size - he weighs 76 pounds and is only 8 months old!! Our vets called him a shepherd/collie mix. He is tall, very very good natured, dog social, gentle, well behaved though NOT fully housebroken but is learning.

And little Daphne with her eyes open!

Snow at Turtle Gardens

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 11:46 am

Snow has arrived and it looks like it will stay. The dogs of course love it. They run and play, roll and throw it in the air. They are like a bunch of school kids at recess - fun, fun, fun. The plus side is no more mud. The down side - the roof isn’t up yet! BUT we have a line on used good condition roofing tin. The guy won’t be back in town until Monday but then it will go lickety split. Dave and the guys are working on the fence today. Once it is up and secure the last of the salukis will be coming over here. Ripley is adoptable and eventually Poncho, 3Penny and Trip will be too. 3Penny has the same problem as the others - severe separation anxiety that manifests itself in horrific destruction. It will take a very special home to work through this. And they aren’t many special homes looking for well trained destructive salukis.

Our sweet little Juno is back. His home has been lost due to the economic crunch facing the north - fewer jobs more lay-offs. They are moving to where the jobs are - with good jobs come low housing opportunities. So a lot of pets are left behind. Juno is a tough very handsome, young shiba inu. He has learned to bully other dogs - he is quite possessive of his human. He is very affectionate wiht people, playful, likes to fetch but is no longer as dog social as he was. He will need an dog savvy home preferably with a shiba experienced family.

And then the biggest dog to come in here for quite a while arrived from the Burns Lake Pound. He looks like an oversize and I mean very oversize border collie. He is most likely a great pyrenees/border collie mix - a common mix up here. He has been neutered/vaccinated and vet checked. He is very gentle with the puppies, he is playful and dog social. He is a bit sketchy with hands particularly around his collar. He is a very nice big boy. He is another dog who once he discovered warmth and comfort of indoors doesn’t want to go outside. He will learn the door swings both ways. Turtle Gardens welcomes our new big guy - Ketherington!

The two new girls are Daphne for the collie mix - and she may already have a family while the husky is Annik. Thank you so much for naming the new arrivals.

An adoption, new arrivals and a donation in the mail!

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 12:41 pm

It is always darkest before the dawn and so it is with rescue too. Just when we hit a new low a latter comes in the mail with exactly what we need to continue. Thank you Mrs. B -of West Vancouver - you have rescued us!! The guys will be back as soon as the tin arrives. The strapping will go up once htye know the width of the nails holes. Then the walls will be finished and as more donations arrive the inside will be completed - insulation, paneling, wiring etc. But all of that is incidental. The roof will keep the building dry so we can add chimney, wood stove and flooring - all of which we have!! Then Dave has an adoption trip - we have 6 dogs ready for their families!!

Speaking of adoptions - guess who got a home!! Wonderful Rocky the lab possibly chesapeake mix found his guy to follow around. JR lost his companion a month ago and was really feeling the loss of a buddy. Rocky was missing his family - a perfect match! Rocky couldn’t wait to get into the car - he was quietly looking out the back seat window as he went by the driveway - he did say goodbye! How cool is that!

And then yesterday afternoon Dave picked up two more Burns Lake Pound pups. The collie pup is the sweetest little girl - just getting her canines so about 5.5 months old and weighs 19.8 pounds. What a beauty inside and out! Turtle Garden welcomes a special little nameless girl:

The other poundling is a sweet dog too. She appears to be a collie/husky (I think we are having another round of collies!!) She looked familiar - we had one that looked a lot like her. She is a smaller size too only 45 pounds. Turtle Gardens welcomes nameless girl #2.

Update from Misty and Jim

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 11:39 am

Thought you would enjoy the pictures of Misty now that she is back home safe and resting.

Cheers,
Jim

Cynda visited Jim and Misty yesterday and says Misty looks GREAT! She is terrified to go outside but she still has her spunky little personality . She lost seven pounds, and the vet gave Jim some cream for her paws - but other than that, she’s fine.

The sun is shining

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 11:46 am

but the works isn’t going on the new building. The money has dried up. So we wait. There is a lot of work elsewhere with TG - the dogs still need their clean rooms - clean up of nightly deposits is still my first job of the day. With colder weather the doors are shut at night - some will ask for the door but most will just squat and go in front of the door. :( Thank goodness for pee pads - they are certainly making the cleanup easier. There is nothing quite so pleasant as the clean crisp smell of bleached floors. It means that the floors are clean once more! Then I can sit down for my cuppa coffee. The others are always on the run - the get-up-and-go so I can get up and do!!

An update from Annie -

Hello Yvette, rainy greetings from Terrace where all the dogs are hiding out in the dry living room….

Annikin Skywalker, formerly Annie the fierce Italian guarddog mix, is gone - we now have a new sheep rug in the bedroom! Don’t know what changed her so drastically, but she no longer wants to be outside and hangs out with us in front of the fire or the TV. She loves going for walks and all that, but it looks like she has had enough of being a tough broad! That’s not at all good for the security of the alpacas, but we don’t force her to go on guard duty, so that’s that then….hmmm…somehow we also got stuck with a discarded border collie with a broken leg and brain damage who is no better at herding than Annikin is at guarding. Alex is going a bit bonkers in the mornings when 4 dogs and 2 cats demand breakfast - all at the same time - but overall the pack is wonderful to have around….well, your story about muddy floors is something we can relate to as well :-)
So happy to hear that Herc is recuperating well, and that the surgery was a success. Couldn’t donate more than the 250.00, but it looks like l might have another job lined up after this one finishes at the end of November, so hopefully we can continue to support the wonderful work you do at TG.
Good luck with the renovations and the weather….
have a tail-wagging good day - best, Sabina and Alex and the pack

Thank you so very much for your donation for Hercules. He is doing well though he would prefer more “out of the ex-pen” time. He sure is a nice dog. The rest of the dogs are also doing well. Lexi has an adoption - she will be going home next trip. Prince Henry’s homevisit is today - he may be going next trip too. Ruedi has several applications so he will most likely have a family next trip too. Daruma has an adoption pending her homevist too. She sure is a doll. I need to post better pictures of Rocky - h is an awesome lab possibly chesapeake mix (he has those eyes!). He likes water, playing with the other dogs and lounging in an easy chair - he likes comfort! What a nice companion he will be for a lucky family.

MIsty has been found!!!

Filed under: Turtle Gardens Diary — yvette @ 9:26 am

Misty is safe, warm and dry.

A woman was walking with her dogs on the dyke near the airport last night. She saw the poster. This morning she was walking near the same place with her dogs, and saw a black speck in the distance. She knew it was Misty. She called Misty’s name and she came running.

She has been dried, fed and Jim is on his way to pick her up. HOW COOL IS THAT!! More details as I know them!

And here is Jim’s update:
Miracles happen and Misty’s story is one of them. After Ellen spotted her last night at 8pm running across the highway and jumping down towards the CP Rail main line we were hoping she would come running for us. Unfortunately a train came by at 80 kmh and our search in a downpour of the woods, tracks and right of way came up empty. The coyotes were howling and crying around us. Even Maya was there, who starred in the Province article about TG needing homes for the sherriff dogs. Maya and Misty know each other well and even though we tried our best (the train going by at 80 kmh did not help)we came up empty. Today while on the way out there to search again the call I have prayed for came in from an angel,Lynn, saying she had Misty and she was safe. Misty ran all night about 12 miles to the west of Pitt Meadows airport on the dykes. This is the exact area she went missing from exactly one week ago to the hour. Lynn had seen the poster last night in the dark and when she saw the black speck on the dyke called her name and she came running to her. When Lynn called I was so shocked I had to confirm she was black and white and she said my name and phone number were on her collar. Lynn had been out walking her two rescue dogs this morning. I want to thank Yvette and all the TG supporters out there who helped, prayed or other wise passed on their good wishes. There are lots of good people all around us, and that combined with Misty’s will to survive and the strong hope I had from our human animal bond, all helped to cause what surely was a miracle. There is a special man in Haney, by the name of Gerald, that I wish to personally thank, but was unable to call him with the number I had. I will be in touch. To all the rest I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude, and thank you very much. All the best. Jim Cook
ps if these comments could also be posted on the Brindleweb site I would appreciate it. (I did)
