About Turtle Gardens

Turtle Gardens is an animal shelter in Northern BC, operated by David and Yvette Labatte, an amazing couple who have rescued and placed almost 4,000 animals since opening their doors to unwanted pets. At Turtle Gardens dogs are not placed in kennels to await a new home but are brought into the family with free run of the house and yard, learning to be good canine companions from the minute they arrive at this safe haven. Three of the dogs in the Outlooks show are from Turtle Gardens so it seemed fitting to send them the proceeds.

Question from Outlooks: “We will donate at least $2,000 Yvette, what could that amount do for Turtle Gardens?”

Answer: “Thank you so very very much! $2000 could do a lot here! That would spay/neuter 18 dogs or vaccinate 66 puppies or 33 puppies will have 2 vaccinations. It will buy 250 drontal plus worm tablets that will deworm 71 large dogs. $2000 will buy gas for 66 dog trips to the veterinarians or 7 TG Bus trips – just the gas. It would buy mega bottles of cleaners, bleach, viricide, paper towels, mops etc. Or it could go directly to the veterinarians for medical costs for damaged dogs, hurt dogs, ear infections, bites, cuts and bruises, lab pathologies for tumors, dentals for seniors. We also have need for a small sturdy u-haul type trailer to haul dog food and supplies on our TG Bus Runs. Dog food is often donated but we don’t have a way to haul it. Transportation costs us $212.69 per pallet by Bandstra. We use 40 to 60 kilograms of kibble per day, plus extra puppy food. And canned food for medications – a tablespoon of canned food hides a pill very nicely! (Glucosamine, immune boosters, vitamins, antibiotics etc) Our dogs are all silverware trained! I am sure I can think of more but $2000 goes a very long way here – the dogs thank you!!

more Turtle Gardens bandana photos- Teya

November 15th, 2009

Hi Auntie Del,

This is Teya here.
Boy here we go again, Mommy put those awful bananas around our neck AGAIN!
She said we had to model one more time and we have to sit nicely just one more time.
Anyways, I thought I’d show her. She tried to put this pink banana around me
and told me to sit, sit still and hold it. She said Auntie Del made these specially for us and it had our names on it. Well I grabbed it from her and ran into the diningroom and
I made Mommy chase me! I made sure I gave that banana (I don’t know why
she calls it a banana) a very good shake, I hope it learnt its lesson – I don’t want
it round my neck.

But then Mommy brought out the TREATS. I do almost anything for treats. My
brothers are so dumb, they sat on my chair and waited for me. So here is another
picture of me and my brothers. I am the pretty one in pink.

Hope you will smile cause Mommy sure didn’t!

Love,
Teya

Animal control to change hands – Burns lake

November 13th, 2009

By Rebecca Billard – Burns Lake Lakes District News click here

The contract for dog control that the Village of Burns Lake (VBL) had with dog catcher Astrid Charlotte Vienten recently came to an end.

According to Tim Palmer, VBL chief administrative officer, Vienten chose to end her contract early after a recent council decision was made not to renew the animal control contract in 2010.

“Last Monday the dog control officer [Vienten] gave notice that she was ceasing to provide the service effective immediately,” said Palmer.

“These services will now be handled by VBL staff,” he added.

“It does not feel right to work for someone that has already decided to let you go,” said Vienten in response.

“I truly enjoyed my six years as animal control officer in Burns Lake and I am disappointed that this service to the community has been cut,” said Vienten.

“It is a step in the wrong direction to discontinue animal control,” she said.

“I am afraid it will be on the backs of the dogs and the safety of our town,”

“We have to agree that there is a dog problem in Burns Lake and if it is not checked properly it can easily get out of hand. As the saying goes, “A society is judged by how it treats its weakest,” Vienten added.

According to Palmer the decision to end the animal control contact in 2010 was made at a recent council meeting.

Vienten in a statement to the Lakes District News that she was given an opportunity to address council with the validity of the animal control services that she was providing.

“The news [the decision to end her contract] came as a shock to me,” Vienten said.

The decision will save the VBL money in wages and other associated costs.

Information provided recently to council regarding local animal control noted that a total of 24 dogs had been impounded by Vienten from January to October of 2009.

Another 22 dogs had been impounded by RCMP and during VBL bylaw enforcement action.

Of the 46 dogs that were impounded during this time 20 dogs were released back to their owners, 22 dogs were taken to Turtle Gardens and four dogs were released to others.

During this same period 69 dog licences were issued by the VBL.

According to Palmer the income to the VBL from the impound charges and licensing fees amounted to a total of $1,670.

Palmer noted that the cost of having a dog catcher on hand for 2009 amounted to $13,294.91.

This included a monthly wage of approximately $1,000.

Palmer also noted that the cost per 24 dogs that were picked up by the dog catcher amounted to $423.28 when calculated out.

The total revenue on impound and licensing for the 24 dogs added to just $36.30 per dog.

According to Palmer there is also further costs associated with animal control that will add up to approximately $3,334.09 for 2009.

These costs include items such as dog tags, dog food and costs associated with the spay and neuter program.

“Only the future will tell if the VBL will be able to handle the animal control effectively, my concern is with the animals,” added Vienten.

What does this mean to Turtle Gardens? Since we have come out of retirement in April of 2006 the Village of Burns Lake has contributed $100 (the euthanasia fee) to the Burns Lake Veterinary Clinic who in turn at a huge discount spays or neuters/vaccinates and vet checks each pound inmate. This was to ensure that the Burns Lake Tax dollars stayed in Burns Lake. Turtle Gardens then picks up the dogs at our expense and rehabilitates each and every one to be good family pets. From April 2006 we received 49 dogs of which 20 were puppies. In 2007 we received 67 dogs of which 32 were puppies. In 2008 again 69 dogs and 25 pups. This year we saw 22 dogs and NO puppies. None of the dogs were adopted back into Burns Lake! We are already seeing a change – the dogs are no longer vetted before arrival – they are kept 48 hours then we are asked to pick them up —immediately. We no longer have the option of waiting until our speuter days to save on transportation costs. Saving money is what VBL says is the reason for change but at what cost? And to who?

Beautiful cats and kittens need homes – Hazelton

November 12th, 2009

Misty is a mature, spayed eight-year old female.  She is a thinker and philosopher when awake, but she loves to curl up in a comfortable spot and nap.   Misty would love to spend her quieter years with an open, welcoming family.  She is about eight years old and healthy.  She was a great hunter in her day.  She now lives in a kennel but would love to get out to enjoy the world and her own home again.  She would gratefully accept wee bit of love and attention.  She is easy-going and friendly but would prefer a quiet home.

Sweet Solomon is a healthy and sociable three-year-old seal-point who is searching for a family and a home of his own.  Solomon is neutered and would love to curl up in a warm spot with a family who love and care for him.  He’s a great listener and for a few pats (and some kibble) will be your beautiful and loving companion for years to come.  He gets along well with other cats, most dogs and adores children.

sweet Solomon

Little Leo loves to play and jump – he has an incredible zest for life.  He is searching for a family to live with, play with and love.  He is open to a home with other cats and children.  He would also enjoy being an only cat with his own human.  He just wants to begin his life!

Ashton loves to run, play and be mischievous.  He is a gorgeous, easy-going guy with a sense of humour.  He would love a family, perhaps a family with children as he loves playing.  Finding a fun-loving and gentle family to curl up with would make his life complete.

Wash that floor a hundred times a day – Turtle Gardens has puppies!

November 11th, 2009

Puppies are oh so cute. But they are peeing and pooping machines! Even though they try to go outside – they have to wait for one of the other dogs to open the door for them. The door doesn’t latch so a tug on the bottom and it opens easily. Most of the dogs learn this quickly – puppies – well not so much. It doesn’t help that Jasper likes to lie across the doorway. He is way too big to move when he is on the wrong side!

Hi Yvette!
It was nice talking to you. Here are two pictures from our Charlie. First picture: rest after playing. Second picture: waiting for dinner – manners matter!! We are so happy that Charlie belongs to our family. He likes carrides and even walking on a leash… He is fine with the cat, Charlie wants to play with her….it is not really what she wants! They will be ok together after they get to know each other a little bit more…
I hope, everyone is well! Thank you again for providing Charlie…
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
