TG Fundraiser – The Pampered Chef! – Chris and Deb

November 5th, 2009

It is getting close to the big day! We need you to come over, have fun, eat great food (the blueberry cheesecake is to die for!!) and raise money for a great cause!! Turtle Gardens would really appreciate your presence!

A friend of ours who is very rescue friendly has become involved with The Pampered Chef.

She will be holding a display party at our home on November 7, 2009 at 12:00 noon in Maple Ridge. A portion (15%) of all proceeds will be donated to Turtle Gardens.

There will be great food, lively conversation, and the chance to view some great products in use. Bring interested family and friends should you wish. The more the merrier.

People can email me at: shihtzustaff@gmail.com to get the address and directions.

Hopefully we can get a lot of people to come to raise the most money for TG. Plus it is well enough before Christmas that people could buy Christmas presents too!

Dog days of summer at Turtle Gardens

July 26th, 2009

Dog days are hot days! Days for lazing around the beach – it is too hot. I hate hot. I find it too hot these days and the long range forecast is for more HOT SUNNY days to come. I am not happy. Hot makes me cranky and the dogs too. They play and eat until early morning by 10 am they are all sprawled out on the floor in front of the fans. They don’t stir again until after 9 pm!! I want to watch my TV shows and relax as it cools off – they want to play!! We compete as the noise levels rise – TV versus growls and play cacophony! I chase them outside – they come back in. Around and around we go until finally peace reigns again and they are finally tired out! What a life.

Updates – first from Gemma Joy!

Hi Yvette,

I have to tell you about Gemma Joy’s new purpose in life:

She has adopted our two new Guinea pigs, Archie and Edith, as her “babies”. She is absolutely obsessed with them, and is very protective of them. When they squeal and talk, she becomes very alert, and stays close by.

When she was introduced to her babies, nose to nose, she licked them ever so gently. It was very sweet.

Gem spends a lot of time with the Guinea pigs, and she has also been bitten by the zoomie bug. It’s quite hysterical when she gets a bad case of the zoomies. I don’t think she knew much about play in her old life,

Gemma now weighs 20 lbs., is in great shape, eats a fully raw diet, and shows no signs of her disease. We’ll take that for as long as we can get it.

And now Fritzi!

Hi Yvette,

It’s been three weeks now and I’ve settled in. I know I made my new mommy very happy last night when she had a whole bunch of people over for a BBQ and I behaved like a perfect gentledog. I fit right in and everyone was amazed at my good manners. I was so good that my mommy didn’t have to tie me up or anything. I found out that when I stick around and be nice, I get a bone to chew on, and boy, do I like that!

We have a routine now all worked out. My mommy goes to bed quite late, so after a quick trip outside around 11 pm we go to bed, me in my kennel, and she in her bed, same room. At around 7am a quick “do busy” outside at around 7am and then straight back to the bedroom where I can now sleep for a couple more hours ON the bed. Great eh? Ever since I have slept in the kennel at night I’ve been totally house clean. Mommy loves that.

After we get up again, it’s coffee and feeding time. Shortly after that we go for a walk or a run on the beach. I run and dig, mommy walks. I wonder if she knows that I get all wet and sandy just to be enveloped into a soft towel for a rub down when we get back, I love that. Then mommy starts her work. I am always a couple of steps behind her or lying beside her. In the afternoon we go for another walk. If I was good we play frisbee, my favourite! After her dinner I get more food and we go for another short walk. The neighbours know who I am and I think they like me, they think I am cute, so they don’t mind me coming over and checking up on them.

Yep, life’s good! Fritzi

Best wishes for your new ventures, Yvette.

The faces of Turtle Gardens

July 24th, 2009

It is way too hot! Summer is green and beautiful and colorful and way way too hot for me and half my dogs. my big girl Shaney was almost given her eternal rest before her time simply because with all the recent deaths I thought she had cancer or a stroke too. She yelped when she went to ge tup and started panting and whining. I saw thta she had lost weight and she wouldn’t eat. I called my vets and they suggested metacam and to book an appointment wiht Driftwood for a home euth as Kr Kye was there today. So I did and an hour later she was napping. An hour after that she got up and ate a bit of food. So I didn’t make the appointment. The next day she was panting so another dose of metacam and she ate again. Another day and she ate first without metacam but I noticed she wasn’t going down the stairs. Her back leg was stiff and had an awkward gait – memory stirred. Then I clued in – she reminded me of Hercules! I watched her closely – and it dawned on me – Shaney had blown her knee! She needs more lakota and regular pain meds. Today she walking ok – very slow and swinging her back leg but is mobile and eating. She is too slow and old to worry about a crate for confinement. She doesn’t move around much anyways. She went down the three steps a half hour ago. It isn’t time yet for Shaney. What a blessing!

Another sad day for Turtle Gardens and a new arrival

July 16th, 2009

Having old dogs means having death as a frequent visitor. Dave and I have a few senior dogs – Squire is 11, Miss Sasha is 18, Gopher is 16, Marty is 17, Redman is 16, Aardvark is 17, Colby is 15, JohnB (a sherriff dog) is 15, Patches is 13, Mia is 12, Penny was 13 year old. Penny was our first downs syndrome dog. She was built chunky with a big belly and a very big happy grin. She never learned but was such a good natured goof that it didn’t matter. Penny had a stroke a couple of days ago. I hoped that it was geriatric vestibular disease but nope – she had another stroke this morning and passed away before I could get Dave mobile to take her to the clinic. She was not who I expected to pass away. Come to think of it Lucy was a surprise too – she was healthy, had no arthritis and poof she is gone. Now Penny is gone too. Who is going to check out the path for the apple dumpling gang? Penny always checked out the tough patches – the little dogs always sent Penny ahead to scope the lay of the land before following her. They knew Penny could be relied on to “check it out” good or bad – Penny would happily go down the path. Many a time Dave had to pull her out of bogs/mud holes/snags when the terrierists told her to go first. Send Penny – was their motto – they never got their feet wet! I hope you find clear paths Penny and enjoy long hikes with your buddies who crossed the bridge ahead of you. Go softly into that good night girl – you were loved.

And the revolving door opens for another lost soul looking for her new family. Gidget is a 3 year old maltese/poodle – a 12 pound white curly lap dog whose beloved owner had a stroke. He will be going into care so Gidget has been welcomed into Turtle Gardens. It is a bit of shock to her but she is adjusting surprisingly well. She likes to be high so is sitting on my desk or chair near the window. She is a sweet girl and will be a delightful companion.

Puppies, updates an a TG Alumni needs our advice help!

July 15th, 2009

The pups did really well with their neuters – BUT they sure hated being locked up!! I got a phone call at noon to please come and pick them up – they wanted to go home! As soon as Dave stoppled the TG Bus and opened the door a stream of pups rushed out down the driveway up the steps and into the door! – Good puppies! They ran to the water dish, had a good long drink then a bite to eat and a nap clustered around my feet at my desk. So…. new puppy parents please be forewarned – theses are very people social puppies, always underfoot and full of mischief. On the plus side they are housebroken – or at least know where the doggie door is to go outside – no more messes indoors. They are also 19 pounds – so gained a pound in a week. Our vets thought they were very nice pups, healthy but they sure don’t like confinement. I wish all puppies were as as much fun as these guys!!

One little pup went home early this morning – the fluffy black and tan with the red collar – not Buca!! His family was so excited to bring them home they couldn’t wait – Christmas in July! He was happy to go home too. Good luck little one and be good!

Updates – first Riika aka Generic our striking karelian bear dog mix!!

Hi Yvette and all the wonderful TG folks!

We just thought you’d like to hear about our wonderful Riika (Generic, Genny)…now that it is almost four months since we adopted her.

Look at her! She is beautiful, isn’t she? And what a delight she has been. Yes, naughty sometimes…but so full of energy and life that we cannot always keep up with her! Everywhere we go people just stop and admire her. She is the most popular girl at doggie day care (where she goes to burn off energy sometimes).

She goes to doggie obedience classes, and will be taking some agility lessons soon.

We are so sorry we cannot come to the reunion because we have a wedding to attend. But maybe you can show her picture around to folks and tell them that we are so, so happy to have her and so glad Turtle Gardens found her for us.

We talk about you all often – and think of you every time we snuggle and love our darling little Ri-Ri. Write back if you have time, we would love to know how you are doing.

Melanie and Jim Ito

And a TG Alumni would like our advice:
Dear Yvette,

We recently went on a small 5 day vacation and left Beckett with a doggy
daycare that he usually goes to a couple times a month. He has never had
any sort of seperation anxiety before -unless left for more than 5 hours,
which we never do.

The first two days back he was alright, but for the past week or so he’s
had rather bad seperation anxiety (or that’s what I think it is). He
freaks out when he thinks we’re leaving the house. We’ve tried to
desenstize him to the things that usually happen when we leave, but since
we both leave at the same time (I’m only gone for three hours), its always
the same.

We’ve tried extra long walks (he gets at least 2 1/2 hours a day and for
the last while its been close to 4). He gets to play with other dogs at
least once every second day at the offleash beach. He’s eating less and
less, trembling, panting really loudly. He hasn’t destroyed anything,
doesn’t bark (that we know of), but I was wondering if you had any ideas
that could maybe help us out. We’ve scheduled an appointment for Saturday
with the vet, who met him for a few minutes and thought it was seperation
anxiety.

We’re definitely willing to try to sort this thing out, but I thought
you’d be a great wealth of information.

Also: right when I get home he’s fine and as he usually is -sleepy,
cuddly, very quiet. After a week and some its kind of messing up my
schedule as well, and I know he’s unhappy, and he’s starting to annoy us
as well.

Not quite sure what do to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Emily
You can definitely put it up. Any help/ideas would be appreciated.
Best,
Emily + Beckett
